The Top of Utah Marathon is this Saturday, September 20th, where I will attempt to again run the 26.2 miles that proved so challenging and rewarding last year. I’m healthy and non-injured (knock-on-wood) so it should go well, but I haven’t trained past a two hour run this summer. I have no predictions on finish time. The race starts at 7AM at Hardware Ranch and follows Blacksmith Fork Canyon into Nibley, Millville, Providence and ending at the Merlin Olson Park in Logan. Last year I finished in 4:15.
If you can come and enjoy the festivities, awesome! If not, you can track the race results LIVE online. You just need my bib number, which is 382.
I updated everyone’s picture on their profile with some snapshots I took on the cruise. I also removed your zits, jazzed up your teeth and smoothed your wrinkles. You all look like celebrities. Enjoy! You can see them all at the About Us link right here.
Conspiracy theories surrounding September 11,2001 are about as plentiful and far-reaching as any other controversial date in history. The number of lives lost and the climatic nature of the violence almost make pointing the finger of conspiracy an act of blasphemy. Still, if you’re like me and you believe the events in the Book of Mormon are types and shadows of things happening in our day and time, you can’t help but cast doubt on the motivation of our leaders, especially considering how easy men are moved by money and riches.
On that note, there was an interesting article in the Salt Lake Tribune today about a 9/11 researcher who was let go from BYU for his “radical” ideas about why the towers came crashing down. You can read the article here.
Even though this a few days late, I just want to tip my hat to the brave men and women from our police, firefighter and military branches who sacrificed on 9/11 and who still risk their necks today. My thoughts also go out to family members who lost loved ones on that sad day. Let’s hope that people in this world can begin to look to peace and love, rather than violence and hate.
Today’s keyword for the week is SURVIVE! Here’s a little video treat in honor of Amy’s bring-the-house-down karaoke. Yes, back to life…back to reality. Pictures and more to come later!
PS - I want to put a cruise DVD together for everyone. Will you all send me your favorite pictures you took during the week? I took over 200, but I’d like some more. Just send them to my Gmail address.
Here’s a little comic book post about the kid’s first day back to school. This is old hat for Emma, who is seemingly so grown up (which makes me feel veeeery old), but it was a shock to the system for lil’ Samchez. But he was brave and put both feet forward and had a great first day at kindergarten. I asked him if he made any friends and he said told me he did. I said, “What are their names?” to which he replied, “Dad, I don’t know. He was a stranger. He was just a dude.” Oh, my. That produced some chuckles.
The Top of Utah Half Marathon is this Saturday. This will be my third go at the 13.1 miles from Blacksmith Fork Canyon to Providence, and the number to beat is 1:44:35 - my time from last year. The race starts at 7AM at the Hyrum Electrical Plant and ends at Zollinger Park in Providence. I think we may go out for breakfast afterwards or head over to Great Harvest for some gianormous cinnamon rolls if anybody wants to come cheer ol’ Andy to a PR. I’m kind of nervous because I feel am a bit more flabby this year and my training hasn’t been as consistent, but hopefully heart and desire will make up for any lack elsewhere.
Kathy and kids came up this weekend and Emma and Sam had a good time hanging out with their cousins. Tonya and Lil’ Duke joined the festivities on Saturday and I matched wits with Sandra and Sneaky at Speed Scrabble on Sunday. I also was demolished by Faith on Wii bowling (and in boxing, baseball, bowling, tennis and golf - by Sneaky AND Faith). So, while it was a fun weekend, my pride and manliness is lying in puddle of mushy, gooey sadness at the foot of Grandma and Grandpa’s Wii. Curse you Nintendo!
I just wanted to be the first person to say: TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE CRUISE! If you want to get really excited, you can check out the Carnival website and take a peek at our destinations. I, for one, am looking forward to Cozumel, Rotan Island and Belize. I am not looking forward to fat guys in speedos or hairy European woman. It’s gonna be good times folks! Get your party hats on and shine your dancing shoes!
