Top of Utah Half Marathon

The Top of Utah Half Marathon was today and it was a great race. A year’s worth of running and conditioning has definitely paid off. Last year, my time was 1:54. This year I finished at 1:44. Mary came in around 2:20, but was really hurting. We took her to the hospital to get her foot looked at after the race. 20 days until the full marathon. I’m getting nervous!

Okay, they posted the official results, so now I can give you more details: There were almost 800 runners and I placed 115. My pace was 8:02 per mile. Last year my pace was 8:42 per mile. According to the McMillan Running Calculator, I should finish the TOU Marathon on September 15th in 3:42:05. We’ll see. The goal I’ve set for myself is to come in at four hours or less. That is supposedly a great time for a first marathon runner, and it beats Oprah, which is all I care about. :)

GREAT JOB! I hope you beat Ophrah too. Just be safe. I’m very proud of you for being in such great shape. Reed and Julie said they saw you in the race.

Thanks everybody. I’m excited for the marathon, but I suppose that’s like saying I’m excited about getting kicked in the groin. As for Mary, I’m not sure. Her foot isn’t fractured like they thought. I truly think Mary has bit off more than she can chew at this stage in her quest. It’s not just physical, but psychological as well. There are times when I’m running and my muscles feel great, my lungs aren’t straining, but my mind is screaming “STOP!” There are a lot of parables to be had between life and running. All the coaches I’ve talked to say “take it one mile at a time” and “don’t think about the finish line until you see it at the end.”
