The Spirit

Just when I was hating Lao because I was so hot and miserable the spirit did come. We went to see a phenomenon where light comes out of the river on the 1st full moon of Oct. We went with some teacher that the other couples work with. He took us to one of the students homes where they fed us (Lao food of course which is the same every where, fish soup, poppy eye salad, vegies on the grill, sticky noodles instead of rice this time, etc). They didn’t know us from Adam but they treated us like family. We shared our tuna sandwiches, fruit and cookies with them and it was great fun. Every Lao I swear thinks that they can sing and play the keyboard and guitar and it is usually the same 2 chords over and over. It is hilarious! They also dance at every dinner! Any way after that we went down to the river with all the other hundreds of Lao people who were picnicing with their families and friends. Each little group tried to share with us. They ask us to eat with them, have a beer with them, share their mats with them and they had never seen us before. That is just how they are and most of them are dirt poor. I left there with a great love for these humble people. They send their wishes for better times in these little boats with candles in them down the river and it was a beautiful evening. One more experience. There is a girl from Utah who served a mission in Thailand that has interpreted for us the last 2 Sundays. Father had mentioned it in his journal and Aunt Susan read it and recognized the name as one of the Sisters that had served here with her and Harold. Margo was so excited and she said that Sue and Harold were their angeles when they served in their area. Isn’t that weird that she would visit here when we were here? I’m much better than my last time writing. Love you all and thanks for the love and encouragement.
